Artist Statement
Dia de los Muertos 2020
Dia de Muertos Collection is a body of illustrations that I have created over a decade. The ‘calacas’ or skeletons” are whimsical illustrations that visually narrate daily activities that any human life would enjoy to do such as: dancing, playing music, swimming under the water, playing with fire and drinking blood. Those same activities are part of my favorite things to do or attend: music concerts, festivals and theatrical plays.
Some of these illustrations have been part of DDM posters to advertise festivals. As a Teaching Artist, I pay homage to my Mexican heritage by cultivating and educating the next generation bringing programs to schools, libraries and community center through King County and Seattle area. I consider myself a mixed-media artist. I use acrylics, watercolor, pencils and black sharpies painted on canvas or paper.
