Natural Wood Arts
Jim Kief
Enjoy nature's beauty with everyday objects. Unique, hand turned bowls and beautiful, and useful items for the kitchen and home. Featuring sustainably sourced wood from locally salvaged Northwest trees. Much of the wood I turn is salvaged or reclaimed from trees that have fallen in a storm or been removed for development. Larger items like bowls are turned from green wood, then dried for several months before the final turning and finish. I like to turn items that can be used and enjoyed: kitchen items like bottle stoppers, fruit and salad bowls, rolling pins, ice cream scoops, etc. To highlight the wood's natural curves and unique grain patterns, I use an innovative coring process where several bowls are cut from the same block, dried, and then hand finished. This allows me save 2-3 bowls from each piece of wood.
